Wow! I’m a long time reader based in Zürich. Will you come up here? I’d love to take you out for lunch or coffee. Have plenty of friends in Lausanne too, in case you’d like to grab an apéro with some friendly locals. Thank you so much for all the fantastic work you do ❤️ //Katarina
Heather, if you have the time, my No. 1 tip is to go to Zurich and see the "Pixelwald" installation by Pipilotti Rist in the Kunsthaus. It's one of the most touching pieces of art I have ever seen ... Hope you have a great time, enjoy the cheese! :)
Reading this silently made my inner side soften to a soggy kind soba-ish style. It's never enough and never truly okay for a little hobbit in the middle earth, and that's the funny and beautiful part of it. It is, I'm even if it doesn't look, feel or taste like it. Thank you for this, always 🙏💖 enjoy your stay in swiss lands ✨
I read this. Understood this. And feel incredibly happy you have given yourself, (including your dear hairy toes) an adventure. Hope it’s as inspiring to you, as your words are to us 💫.
I did three tours of duty in Midland, TX so I completely understand the culture shock you must be experiencing. West Texas sunsets are beautiful, and the people are friendly, and the wind blows and tumble weeds roll every Spring!
Heather I love this! I am also a hairy toed hobit but my method is to rashly say yes to things (and then freak out about leaving the hobit hole afterward). This month I am going on a work trip to South Africa (from the UK) - this is a big deal. I am also co-ordinating/running training for a large group of new joiners the week after. This feels like an even bigger deal. Thank you for reminding me why I am doing both these things. I sometimes say (to other people - I don't remember to say it to myself) that feeling uncomfortable is how you know you're growing.
LMAO this hobbit is leaving the hole today for Sweden where I will attempt to frolic among the lithe Swedish elves. I have been so in my head about it with concerns! and anxieties! and whatifs! So this was timely, thank you.
Oh beautiful Switzerland... Heather, if you can, walk up in the vineyards above Lausanne, find a caveau (my fave is Caveau des Vignerons d'Epesses) and have a glass of their Swiss white wine with their own cheeses. Heaven. Also see if someone can serve you the visually stunning and delicious flower-petal-shavings of Tête de Moine (look it up!) And don't miss the fall specialty Raclette, especially if you can find an outdoor fall festival where they serve it farmer style.
I'm heading back there myself in a few weeks -- had the great fortune to work in Basel then Bern in my 20s (in the mid 1980s). My old colleagues are having a reunion! Can't wait to reconnect with long-dormant friendships.
Hope you're enjoying it! Travel is a hassle and disruptive. Why not stay home lol. So many things to do, pack, deal with lines at the airport, sitting uncomfortably on a metal flying tank for several hours, not thinking about airplane crashes or near misses/door plugs blowing out, dealing with jet lag and different weather/temps/languages/electrical outlets/water/toilets/tipping culture/worrying about losing your passport or getting pickpocketed/will your credit card work/navigating etc etc in the new place. But, travel is still fun and a good experience. 😋Coming home and crawling into bed right away always feels amazing after a long trip 🤗
Thank you for your commitment to the compassionate zone. Every morsel of wisdom and whimsy that you share is so special and so needed in this world. I hope you have a beautiful time in Switzerland! 🌟🤍
The other great thing about hobbits is we get to eat breakfast twice.

I moved last year to West Texas after 10 years in Lausanne. I miss it terribly. Hope you can enjoy it all!

Ugh, I love you and your devotion to your work, Heather. It's a beautiful quality to have. Enjoy Switzerland, I hear it's beautiful!
Hah! Very recently, we were in Prague. I had to be dragged.
So lovely to think of you smelling the crisp air, drinking a good cup of coffee and looking at the mountains.
You're always so inspiring! Thank you and have a good trip, greetings from Italy! :)
I loved this and very much needed to read it. Thank you. I hope you and your toes have a wonderful time in Switzerland.

One advantage of Switzerland: VERY unlikely to get pickpocketed!
